X Racing Announces Race Dates for Connecticut's Mount Southington Ski Area
HILLCROSS, SNOWCROSS, SUNDAY FUNDAY classes to run March 20-21
PLANTSVILLE, Connecticut (Oct. 23, 2026) — Officials at X RACING have announced a new event for their 2027 northeast snowmobile racing schedule. On March 20-21, teams will converge on historic Mount Southington ski area for a weekend of HILLCROSS, SNOWCROSS and SUNDAY FUNDAY (Kidz & Ditchbangers) racing.
Mount Southington played host to snowmobile events in the past; with two of three planned races being completed (2017 and 2019), while a lack of snow kept the engines silent in 2018. Next March, the sights and sounds of sled racing will once again return to the Constitution State in fine fashion.
“I'm super excited to have Mount Southington join our family of host sites in New England,” X Racing president Joe Duncan said. “We wanted to cover more than just Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. We know there are a lot of racers from southern New England out there, as well.
“Now, they'll have a race they can call their own. I'm certain we'll have plenty of racers next March, given the fact we have classes for just about any machine out there. We'll have a full weekend with all kinds of racing.”
X Racing has spearheaded a significant change to the way regional snowmobile racing is run in the past few years. Gone are the expensive, limited-production race sleds; replaced by everyday machines that folks already have in their garages. Classes for all types of sleds has made racing affordable again.
Sleds still fly through the air and compete on a LeMans-style track layout, it's just tamed down a bit for most classes until the Pro Open, Pro Lite and Pro Vet classes roll out. You'll still see plenty of highflying action on track, but there are also several chances for a “regular Joe” to race for fun.
“We're absolutely thrilled to bring snowmobile racing back to our mountain,” Jay Dougherty, General Manager at Mount Southington said. “It's been a few years since we hosted it; people still talk about it all the time. We're happy to bring it back and get that buzz going again.
“We buy Snowmobiles and ATVs at our local shops for use on the mountain. We're happy to support them as local businesses, and they'll be excited to learn we're bringing snowmobile racing back to the mountain. Their customers who buy sleds and go riding up north will have a race to attend here now.”
Mount Southington opened in 1964 on the site of an old dairy farm. The ski area was a vision of Dr. Harold Richman, who, along with many other family members and the Palmisano family, of Bristol, CT, purchased the farm, carved out trails, installed lifts and snow-making equipment to get started.
After 62 years, their efforts are still making great memories for skiers and riders of all ages. Today, the mountain offers 14 trails serviced by seven lifts; including three triple chairs and two doubles. Mount Southington is known for great skiing, warm hospitality, a friendly staff and short lift lines. In an industry full of corporate-owned mountains with no local ties, Mount Southington is a gem.
